Our First Annual Wellness Day
On Friday, April 12, 2013, Tampa Day School celebrated its 1st annual Wellness Day. This event was the brainchild of Renee Koutras and Jim Larkin, with the purpose of exposing students to more “healthy” choices and encouraging them to make these healthy choices in their day-to-day lives.
The day began with an invigorating walk to a local park. Students and staff all participated, and it was the perfect start to a day filled with food for the body and brain. Guest speakers gave presentations about building resiliency, the impact of our environment on our food, and meditation as a way of staying healthy. Information and demonstrations of physical activity included: yoga, martial arts, and exercise demonstrations by a personal trainer—all options for keeping active in our daily lives. Staff contributed to, and all participated in, a delicious and healthy lunch that day.
The middle school students then took part in a Converting Sugar Lab. The students used information from some of their favorite drinks to figure out the actual amount of sugar per serving. This lab was quite an eye-opener for students and teachers alike!
Wellness Day was a great success at TDS. While not the usual curriculum, students went home with important information for maintaining and sustaining their health.
