Musical Theatre Summer Workshops
These three-week, intensive musical theatre workshops for grades 5-9 teach the many facets of performing arts, including voice, dancing, acting, set design and costume design. Students experience not just what it’s like to be a star, but also what it’s like to be a member of a team striving to accomplish a common goal.
The social skills learned during these workshops are immeasurable. Students not only find themselves welcome here, but truly needed.
Workshop Sessions
Two three-week sessions are available:
Session One: June 11 to June 29
Final performance on June 29
Session Two: July 16 to August 4
Final performance on August 4
Both sessions meet Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Workshop Classes
Each day consists of several different class sessions:
Voice
Learn proper breath-control techniques (diaphragmatic breathing), choral singing, proper enunciation, and basic music and sight-reading theory.
Acting
Engage in multi-sensory acting exercises, learn characterization and development and study acting techniques. Specifically, Stanislavski’s “method” is utilized.
Dance
Take part in the different genres of dance used by performers on the musical theatre stage. Jazz, ballet, modern, hip-hop, Latin and African dance are all explored.
Design
Discover the basics of set and costume design. Build props and costumes, design sets and practice painting techniques.
Leadership
Joanne Salmon, is the performing arts director at Tampa Day School. Ms. Salmon is a certified K-12 ESE teacher and 9-12 drama teacher. Under her tutelage, students have performed 1001 Arabian Nights, Grease: The TDS Movie, The Wizard of Oz, The Wild, Wild West, The SOS Titanic, The Montgomery Bus Boycott, The Lion King, and most recently, Fiddler on the Roof.
Cost
The cost for each three-week workshop is $650 per student. A $150 deposit is due at registration.
